Colossians 2:6-7

Colossians 2:6-7

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”

Read all of Colossians 2

Great couple of verses.  Clearly our thankfulness and subsequent acts of piety are viewed in their proper perspective.  They are in no way, the means by which we might hope to appease or please God… as thought by our good works we might hope to earn our place before him.

Rather, they are the natural consequence of a heart renewed and filled with God’s grace and Spirit.  I’m reminded of Heidelberg Catechism explanation of why we are obliged as believers to do “good works.” A86, “Because Christ, having redeemed us by His blood, also renews us by His Holy Spirit after His own image, that with our whole life we show ourselves thankful to God for His blessing….”

I suppose its a little bit like the saying, “Where there’s smoke there’s fire.”  Colossians 2:5 is the premise on which today’s verses are based:

“For though I am absent from you in body, I am present with you in spirit and delight to see how disciplined you are and how firm your faith in Christ is.”
