1 Chronicles 16:8

“Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done.”

The first two exhortations from today’s verse fits right in with those of last week… of thanking and praising God for His grace and provisions.  The final exhortation is what caught my attention.  “make known among the nations what He has done.”  Why?  If God is only interested in His own special people, why publish abroad the mighty things that he has done.

I think in passages like this there are a couple things going one.

 1. The fact that God’s renown or reputation among the nations matters to God.  If we jump ahead to Philippians 2 or I Peter 2, we’re told to live moral and upright lives among the Gentiles that though they speak evil of us, they will know and “give glory to God” on the day of judgment.

 2. The other thing is the fact that already in the OT God has an interest in all the people of the world.  The promise is covenental, but it is also going to all the nations and peoples around the world.  The residents of heaven celebrate this truth in Revelation 5:

“You are worthy to take the scroll,
And to open its seals;
For You were slain,
And have redeemed us to God by Your blood
Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation,
And have made us kings and priests to our God;
And we shall reign on the earth.”
