John 17:17

“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”

Read all of John 17

These words were spoken by the Lord Jesus in what is called his High Priestly Prayer in John 17.  It comes at the end of what is sometimes called the Olivet Discourse, both of which were spoken and prayed during the days just before of betrayal and crucifixion.   I would encourage you to read through John 17.  It is perhaps as clear as any passage at revealing the heart and passion of the Savior.  What is it that He desired?  Wanted?  Longed for?  Clearly it was the salvation and preservation of His people.

This is clearly the intent of this 17th verse.  He is asking the Father to use the Word (the Scriptures) to sanctify (purify–holy-fy if you will) His people.  Jesus distinguishes between his disciples and those who would become disciples through their witness.

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21  that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”
