Colossians 1:9

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives,”

The Apostle realizes that salvation is a supernatural work of God that hinges on faith alone in the one sacrifice of Christ on the cross. We are saved by grace through faith… that is, we are counted just and accepted by God by virtue of his work on our behalf. This once and forever event is called justification. Christ’s perfect righteousness and holiness are credited to our account. This isn’t so much a once and done event in the past as a beginning and continuing event. We are only and forever accepted by God because of Christ’s atoning death.

This be said, he also recognizes the way in which this supernatural work of God’s grace will and should impact the hearts and lives of God’s people. This is the subject of his prayer in verse 9ff, what is generally referred to as sanctification. Verse 10 then includes his anticipation!

10 “so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God…”

One almost has to continue reading:

11 “strengthened with all might, according to His glorious power, for all patience and longsuffering with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in the light. 13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.”
