Verse for Today I John 2:15,16

1 John 2:15-16

“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.”

Read all of 1 John 2

This is one of those verses that cuts to the quick. We read these words and then wonder if we love the world too much or fall under that judgment of it. I’m not saying we don’t.

As with transmissions our lives are lived in any of a number of gears. Sometimes forward, sometimes backward, sometimes neither. Many of us want to think that we can comfortably just stay in neutral. Not sure that fits with these words.

Another passage where “the world” and “worldliness” are applied to Christians is in James 4:

“Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”
